Grandpa Green
A story about a child’s great grandfather. Everything takes place in the grandfather’s garden, where the topiary illustrate the grandfather’s informative experiences. It is casually mentioned at the end that sometimes Grandpa Green forgets things. The story ends with the narrator sculpting a topiary of their great grandfather.
I will absolutely own that this one speaks to me so deeply because Grandpa Green reminds me of my Grandpa Joe, who loved his garden and had Alzheimer’s. However, that being said, I love the look at loving someone who forgets things, and the special relationship between children and grandparents.
Note: This book has a few potentially problematic places. The book states that Grandpa stole his first kiss, and talks about Grandpa fighting in World War II, complete with pictures of planes, parachuters, and a cannon.
In our library, we have corrected the sentence “In middle school he stole his first kiss” to read “In middle school he had his first kiss”.
